O ModCloth, where are thou?

I am sure that everybody knows the american site Modcloth, filled with vintage style dresses, full skirts, polka dots blouses, bows and tons of other quirky and pretty things that will make any vintage lover gal instantly fall in love. But all of those things are most of the times just a dream for italian girls (and I think for all europeans as well) because of the high shipping costs and the custom duties that you have to pay when the package reaches your country - which it's quite expensive, being Modcloth based overseas.
While they have just launched their Last Hurrà Summer sales (geez, up to 70% off!) once again I am drooling over and over all those pretty dresses I can't have due to the custom duties at my european country's border. It's frustrating. I really don't like to throw away my money for something like this which could be completely avoided by shopping local, even online.

Ecco :)

As a premise to this post: it's not my intention to argue or discard or promote any of the mentioned shops in this post, but it's just what I think and thought for long time now (it has been forever to write this post!) and I am just giving away some advice that might be useful to some people who are looking for informations about shipping costs and custom duties, and nothing more. :)

ModCloth, parliamone.

Modcloth, let's talk about it. I like you, I mean, I really like you. But I always have to avoid shopping from you.
At their shipping costs for Europe you have to add the custom duties (which differs from country to country and according to the package's weight) that makes purchasing from the US out of question.
Just at once I bought a dress from them and it was a REAL drain to me. Just to give you some numbers, at the shipping costs (20$ circa) I had to add 44€ when the package has reached my home. Which has actually doubled the price of the dress, making it for a totally crazy and insane buy to me, as I am used to low cost, used/vintage, sales and offers, stock, and, even when I am going to buy something from a new collection, I will never pay more than 40€. Never ever ever. First, because I think that initial costs are necessary pumped up. And then, I really had to like it or need it, or I give up, at least until the sales: why should I pay for full price when I can get it at the half (or even less!) just by waiting a bit?

Chessò, magari in Gran Bretagna?

Many times I wonder why Modcloth doesn't have a stock base in Europe where they can send out all their pretty things to us europeans vintage lovers. Yep, because just one european based stockhouse (they don't do shops) would make us all do an happy dance. Maybe in Britain? Alright, the question is quite complex, and I am pretty sure that it has already been studied and discussed by others. But I am just throwing in an idea, as I am certain they would make great sales with all their european fans!
I follow Modcloth from years now, and even tho I was less pleased by their new garments lately (but I think it's because of last two seasons trends, which I utterly disliked), I usually find something I like every time I go visit their site (not to mention my very long wish list), expecially in their retro/vintage inspired area.
So I usually get some inspiration from them... and then I look around, trying to find something similar in the shops here in Italy or in european based online shops. And that's because if I think of the shipping cost from the US + custom duties, I think that buying from them is just impractical and expensive to me. And then there is plenty of similar things out there, both in regular shops and in vintage, and even in the marketplace or thrifting, you just need a bit of patience and things will magically pop up at you, eventually.

Sugarhill Boutique è presente anche su Zalando.it.

Last but not least, I'd like to share a little "secret", which you might or might not know yet, but here it is: just some of Modcloth's garments are created by their designers, since most of them comes from many different outsider designers and indie stylists. Their philosophy and what they actually do (most of the times) is to group an interesting collection of indie production, from clothes to shoes, from accessories to small furnishings for the house, stopping by vintage as well. Their lovely dresses are often made in USA - but quite too often are made in China as most of the things we all buy - and sometimes they come from small european indie designers, mostly from Great Britain, who have a website too of course, often with online shopping. Yep, no custom duties and lower shipping costs (if any) for us european gals! *insert happydance here*
For example,  Sugarhill Boutique and Miss Patina are two of their suppliers. I am in love with them, expecially Miss Patina, which carries tons of pretty garments! I never bought from them yet, but I costantly look and drool over it :P
I report also Pepa Loves, which is a small spanish brand filled with nice pretty things. And a recent discover (at least new to me), Dig This Clothing, an UK based online shop that carries Bettie Page items (as seen at Modcloth as well) and their own brand, made of very pretty retro looking garments. And Top Vintage, a dutch online shop with retro inspired things (and lots of brands like Esther Williams, Bettie Page, Pinup Couture, Stop Staring, etc)

You can find more exaples in this new post.  ;)
(and another one with a list of european shops is coming soon, so stay tuned)

Mmmm. Forse. Chissà.

edit: potete trovare altri esempi e suggerimenti IN QUESTO POST! ;)

And if we just move a step forward, always with an eye to the wallet, sometimes even Promod and Camaieu and even Oviesse do vintage inspired and pretty things. I have always had great shopping at these shops, you just need to know what are you looking for, and make a good choice since they are always filled with too many things! Patience is the key.
And looking at the Great Britain shops again, Dorothy Perkins, Miss Selfridge, People Tree, Topshop, River Island, Asos, are all UK based - which means no custom duties. (hint hint..)
If I look over their basic or too trendy lines, I always find something pretty and vintage looking that I'd buy in a heartbeat... But I have to tell that due to my broken wallet I've never did a splurge and bought online from these shops, so I can't really tell about it. They sure have pretty things, though. :P

And then I always advice to first have a deep look around you: local shops, local markets, vintage... Buying local is always the best thing for enviroment, business, economy.
And after all, there's always Etsy! Which is fullfilled with european shops as well. You just need to do a search, they are right there, waiting for you to drool over. :)

Thoughts? Suggestions? I'd love to hear your opinion!
BTW, I can't buy anything at this time... I am pleased just by looking at all these pretty things and getting some inspiration... Mmmm. Maybe.

edit: you can find some more examples and suggestions AT THIS POST! ;)
